TODAY'S HEADLINE: The US government blocked a powerful AI model two weeks ago. On Friday, it decided who gets to use it.

In an unusual move, the federal government recently forced one of the leading AI companies to shut off its most advanced model over national security fears. On Friday, it partly reversed course, clearing Anthropic to turn its Mythos 5 model back on, but only for about 100 vetted companies and government agencies. The same day, rival OpenAI agreed to limit its newest model to government-approved partners too. It is a striking sign that Washington is stepping into the role of gatekeeper for cutting-edge AI. Here is what happened and why it matters.

Investors see ANOTHER return from Masterworks (!!!!)

That’s 6 sales in 7 months. 29 all time. And the performance?

16.5%, 17.6%, and 17.8%, net annualized returns on sold works held longer than one year (See all 29 at Masterworks.com)

It’s not from stocks, private equity, or real estate… it’s from contemporary and post war art. Crazy, right?

With Masterworks, you don’t need to be a BILLIONAIRE to invest in multi-million dollar art anymore.

Historically, the segment overall has had attractive appreciation and low correlation to stocks.*

Masterworks targets works featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso, identifying what they believe to have significant long-term appreciation potential, not just at the artist level but at the level of individual artworks.

As one of the largest players in the art market, with $1.3 billion invested over 500 artworks, they pass critical advantages through to their 70,000+ members to add art to their portfolios strategically.

SECTION 01 // What actually happened

From Shutoff to Limited Release

On Friday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent Anthropic a letter saying he had determined that "appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners" to access its Claude Mythos 5 model. That cleared the model for release to more than 100 US institutions, including major companies and federal agencies, ending a two-week standoff.

The reversal matters because of how the standoff began. Earlier in June, the government ordered Anthropic to block all foreign-national access to Mythos 5 and its weaker sibling Fable 5, citing national security. To comply, Anthropic disabled both models entirely, even for its own foreign-national employees. Friday's letter lifted the block for Mythos, but stayed silent on Fable 5.

SECTION 02 // Why the worry

Why a Model Got Blocked

Mythos 5 is described as Anthropic's strongest cybersecurity model. The concern, raised by security experts for months, is that a model this capable could help hackers find and exploit software vulnerabilities unusually fast. Other companies, including Amazon, had warned the models might be "jailbroken" for malicious purposes.

There was also a specific trigger. The White House reportedly grew concerned after learning Anthropic had granted access to a South Korean telecom firm it believed had ties to China. That worry about powerful AI leaking to rivals abroad helped prompt the original export-control order that shut the models down.

SECTION 03 // Not just Anthropic

OpenAI Falls in Line Too

This is not a one-company story. On the same Friday, OpenAI announced its newest model and said it would comply with the government's request to limit the initial rollout to a "small group of trusted partners." Two of the biggest AI labs, in other words, are now releasing their most advanced systems through a government-approved guest list.

That is a sharp turn for the Trump administration, which signed an executive order on June 2 promising a light-touch approach and only voluntary, optional reviews. The back-to-back actions on Anthropic and OpenAI suggest a more hands-on posture is taking shape in practice, even without new legislation behind it.

SECTION 04 // Why it matters now

Washington as Gatekeeper

The bigger story is that the US is building the rules for frontier AI on the fly. There is still no consistent law here, just decisions made case by case, sometimes over a single weekend. That creates real uncertainty for companies, and it leaves many users in the dark about when, or whether, they will get access to the most powerful tools.

It also has global ripple effects. European officials and other US allies have voiced frustration at suddenly depending on decisions made in Washington over who can use leading AI. As these models get more capable, the question of who controls access, and on what terms, is becoming one of the defining tensions of the AI era.

THE TAKEAWAY

What This Means For You

First, AI is now a national security matter. The most advanced models are being treated a bit like sensitive technology, with the government weighing in on who can use them. Expect "who gets access" to become as big a question as "what can it do."

Second, the rules are still being written. Decisions are happening case by case, not through clear law. If you build on or rely on cutting-edge AI, that unpredictability is worth planning around, since access can change with little warning.

Third, the most powerful AI may not be public. A tier of top models could increasingly go first to vetted companies and agencies, not everyday users. The AI you can access may differ from the most capable systems that exist.

FAQ // Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Anthropic's Mythos 5 model?

Mythos 5 is described as Anthropic's most powerful cybersecurity-focused AI model. Its advanced capabilities, particularly around finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities, are what prompted national security scrutiny from the US government.

Why did the government block it in the first place?

In June, the government issued an export-control directive citing national security, ordering Anthropic to suspend all foreign-national access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Concerns included the risk of the models being misused by bad actors and a report that access had been granted to a firm believed to have ties to China.

Who can use Mythos 5 now?

Following Friday's decision, the model can be released to roughly 100 vetted US institutions, described as trusted partners, including major companies, cyber defenders, infrastructure providers, and federal agencies. It is not being made broadly available to the general public.

Is OpenAI affected too?

Yes. On the same day, OpenAI said it would comply with a government request to limit the rollout of its newest model to a small group of trusted partners, indicating the approach extends beyond a single company.

What does this mean for everyday AI users?

The most advanced AI models may increasingly be released first to vetted organizations rather than the general public. For now, the consumer tools most people use are separate, but the episode signals that access to frontier AI is becoming more controlled.
